In Amsterdam central station, a destitute caught sight of 2000 Euros in a wallet abandoned on a train. Not minding his homeless condition, he decided to report it to the police.
Instead, Hadjer Al-Ali – who has been living without shelter for one and a half years now – came across the wallet. While she was looking for empty plastic bottles so that she can sell them in order to make some money at the Amsterdam main train station. The 33-year-old woman handed over. The wallet containing a large amount of cash but unfortunately no identification or contact information about its owner.
The police lauded Al-Ali’s honesty saying “We believe in making honesty pays you know what? He got ‘Silver Thumb’ award which we sometimes give our citizens as well as a gift coupon worth 50 Euros.” If not claimed within a year, this money will go to whoever finds it out.
Al-Ali was featured in a video posted by local media outlet De Stentor. Where he stressed that he would never keep any item that does not belong to him. Moreover, he expressed optimism towards something different coming into his life due to this kind act like getting employed or even accommodation.
