Australian cricket captain Alyssa Healy will miss the rest of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) season due to a knee injury. The injury puts her participation in the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series against India in doubt. Further assessments will determine the timeline for Healy’s recovery.
The 34-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has been dealing with injuries throughout the season, participating in only four of the Sydney Sixers’ seven matches. Healy last played against the Brisbane Heat, where she had already given up her wicketkeeping duties. This latest setback comes on top of a foot injury that kept her out of the final stages of Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE last month.
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on December 5 at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane. The series start comes just four days after the WBBL season concludes. Australia then faces another ODI series in New Zealand and the multi-format Ashes series against England starting in January. Healy’s absence could necessitate significant changes to Australia’s squad.
Tahlia McGrath is the likely candidate to captain Australia if Healy is unavailable for the ODIs. McGrath previously captained the team in Healy’s absence during the T20 World Cup.
