Ajay Devgn has recently portrayed a sportsman in Maidaan, and now he is preparing for another film about sports. This time round, he will impersonate Palwankar Baloo, the path-breaking cricketer who is considered India’s first Dalit player. This information was made public by Priti Sinha on May 29, 2023 on social media site X (formerly Twitter).
Ajay Devgn to star in biopic of India’s first Dalit cricketer Palwankar Baloo; to be helmed by Tigmanshu Dhulia
The announcement showed that Sinha had worked together with Ajay Devgn and director Tigmanshu Dhulia. “Baloo Palwankar’s story based on @Ram_Guha sir’s book ‘A Corner Of A Foreign Field’ will be produced by us,” she said as they were making an effort to take this cricketer’s tale to the large screen.
We are producing Baloo Palwankar’s story based on @Ram_Guha sir’s book “A Corner Of A Foreign Field” @ajaydevgn @dirtigmanshu @pritisinha333. We are soon doing this great cricket player’s story on film @ABsay_ek https://t.co/u9xQxTWB7P
Filming is expected to start late next year. Historian Ramchandra Guha’s book would reportedly inform the making of this project that explores Palwankar Baloo’s life and struggles. Baloo began his journey as a humble Pune cricket club groundskeeper, being born into the Dalit community. However, his hard work and immense talent did not go unnoticed, which led him being selected for Hindu Gymkhana in 1896. Guha presumably addresses some of such difficulties that faced Baloo during his career due to caste discrimination.
Ajay Devgn will also feature in Neeraj Pandey’s Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha opposite Tabu. Also Singham Again, an action extravaganza by Rohit Shetty.
