NEW DELHI: With Australia set to host India in a five-match Test series starting on November 22, star Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh emphasized the strong friendships between players of the two teams, despite the intense on-field rivalry.
The series promises to be an exciting contest as both India and Australia are eager to win the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
India has had the upper hand over Australia in recent years, winning the last four series, including two victories on Australian soil during the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons.
Overall, India has claimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy ten times, compared to Australia’s five, with Australia’s last victory in 2014-15 and their last win in India back in 2004-05.
Marsh spoke about the special rivalry between the two cricketing giants, highlighting the significance of such series in promoting the game globally while maintaining competitive spirit.
“I think it’s just the cricket that’s been played between the two teams. If you look at the history, the recent history, we’ve won stuff, they’ve won stuff. And I think that when it’s back and forth like that, it builds that rivalry within yourselves. You know there’s great friendships in the Indian team with our team, so there’s no hatred. But it’s a great on field rivalry, both teams want to win. And Australia versus India, it’s another opportunity to grow the game of cricket. Not that cricket needs growing in India, but worldwide. People tune into these big series,” Marsh said.
While the first Test will be played in Perth, the second game will be a day-night affair, starting December 6 at Adelaide Oval.
The series will then move to The Gabba in Brisbane for the third Test, scheduled from December 14 to 18.
The fourth match of the series will be the customary Boxing Day Test at Melbourne’s historic Melbourne Cricket Ground, set from December 26 to 30.
The series will then culminate with the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 7.
