Facing a tough challenge, Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi leads his injury-hit team against a much stronger New Zealand side in a one-off Test at Greater Noida, South of New Delhi. It posed a serious challenge for the Afghanistan side which has hung its hopes on an upset victory over the ranked seventh test playing nation as they have already lost methodic spin bowler Rashid Khan and promising fast bowler Naveed Zadran to injury. In such a context, Afghan cricket has included three uncapped players in the 16-member squad including spin bowler Shams Ur Rahman and fast bowler Khalil Ahmed. For them, it will be their first of the six Tests in the next 2 months in the continent where they are not hailed in terms of the results-16 wins and 90 Tests played. From India, they will be heading to Sri Lanka to play a two Tests in Galle late this month then they will come back to India to play a three-match series abusing Rohit’s men. To address this problem, a week ago, New Zealand included former Sri Lanka spin bowler Rangana Herath and former India batting coach Vikram Rathour in the support staff to get a better understanding of the conditions in the region.
