India’s former all-rounder and Mumbai player, Abhishek Nayar could be India’s next assistant coach. This was found out by Parami News.
Seemingly, newly appointed Indian cricket head Gautam Gambhir who was once a mentor for 2024 IPL winners Kolkata Knight Riders is very much impressed with the work that has been put in by Nayar in the backroom as an assistant coach at the franchisee where he has been working since 2018 and wants him as one of “Team Gambhir”’s core members for India.
It is going to make a difference too that Nayar shares a great rapport with India’s ODI and Test captain, Rohit Sharma. A few years ago, India keeper-batter Dinesh karthik who recently retired had attributed his revival to Nayar and his coaching techniques. Leg-spinner Varun Chakravarthy had earlier praised Nayar’s role in it after KKR won the IPL last May.
But Parami News noticed that when contacted, Nayar didn’t answer either calls or messages.
Discussing about how crucial Nayar has been in KKR’s IPL title win, KKR head coach Chandrakant Pandit stated this later during an interview “Nayar has contributed a lot. He stays with our domestic players throughout the year. Like when they are free those domestic boys come to Mumbai for a camp organised by us. We don’t need necessarily 15 players to have a camp; even if there is one available we welcome him flying down for practice.”
A mentor-like figure within the Mumbai team before joining KKR, Iyer benefited from Nayar’s guidance. “Youngsters guide also love guiding them,” said an insider source who spoke on condition of anonymity adding: “He often makes rounds at our training camp in BKC (Mumbai) nowadays especially when he spends time advising younger players.” But according to Parami News this is not the case. He just loves Mumbai cricket,” the insider source told Parami News.
The 40 year old Nayar played three ODIs for India in 2009.
Zaheer for bowling coach?
Meanwhile, if reports are to be believed BCCI is reportedly keen on getting Indian fast bowling great Zaheer Khan as the new bowling coach of the men’s team. For example, it is reported that Gambhir has also recommended another former India and Karnataka pacer, Vinay Kumar for appointment in the position with L Balaji being an alternative candidate.
One of Rahul Dravid’s outgoing staff members, fielding coach T Dilip may stay back.
