A thorough gentleman’: PM Modi, Gambhir, Harbhajan remember Anshuman Gaekwad.
Anshuman Gaekwad, a former Indian cricketer who featured in 40 tests and 15 ODIs, died following a long fight with blood cancer. There were several pivotal contributions made by Gaekwad to the Indian cricketing landscape, including being a coach and selector.
The death of this man has seen the tributes pour in from many high profile people including the Prime Minister Mr.Narendra Modi, the India head coach Gautam Gambhir and the former spinner Harbhajan Singh.
This comes after PM Modi in his official X account expressed his condolences over Gaekwad’s positive impact on Indian cricket. “Shri Anshuman Gaekwad Ji will be remembered for his contribution to cricket. He was a talented player and an excellent coach. His loss is painful. Sympathies to his family & admirers. Om Shanti”, posted Modi.
Gautam Gambhir who is currently in Sri Lanka with the Indian team for white ball series shared his grief too. “Saddened by news of demise of Anshuman Gaekwad ji. May god give strength to his family & loved ones”, wrote Gambhir on X
“It’s really very sad that Anshuman Gaekwadsir is no more; I have great memories of playing my first Test under him as our coach,” reminisced Harbhajan Singh, who himself had debuted for India under Gaekwad’s tenure as coach. “Anshuman Gaekwad’s sir demise is a heartbreaking news.Have fond memories of making my test debut under his coaching. A thorough gentleman.Indian cricket will be poorer in his absence. Rest in Peace. Condolences to family.” Harbhajan told reporters during an interaction session.
Home Minister Amit Shah also mourned him on X. “Deeply saddened by the demise of Anshuman Gaekwad Ji, a legendary cricketer whose cricketing skills enhanced the pride of Indian cricket. My heartfelt condolences are with his family and followers during this hour of grief. Om Shanti.” Said Shah.
This was echoe by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who emphasized Gaekwad’s influence in the world of cricket. “My deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr Aunshuman Gaekwad. Heartbreaking for the entire cricket fraternity. May his soul rest in peace.” Said Jay Shah.
Gaikwad lived to play and breathe out cricket throughout his career and even into old age, making an indelible impact on Indian sports. Those close to him as well as numerous others inspired by his career as a player, coach and selector will always cherish his memory.
