It’s been 10 long years since Australia has managed to wrap their hands around the Border Gavaskar Trophy – a trophy which would symbolize Australia’s dominance over India in bilateral series for the next decade but was lost over a period of four years. With this Nathan Lyon still a veteran off-spinner believes that Australia in the coming Aussie summer will go out to the defence of the Border Gavaskar Trophy to a shocking level taking it back.
This time the tournament will weigh heavily on the kilowatt and therefore all thegači maximum 5 tests will be coming. This will also be for the first time that there will be a provisional BGT winner will as well compete on the test match championship position which has never been the case. The current leaders of WTC are Indians and they are followed by Australians.
However, even before the India’s tour of Australia in December 2020 and January 2021, that pain of not having won the trophy since 2014 was already felt in the comments of many former and current Australian cricketers as that buzz for that big face off primarily a Test series approached for Australian team.
It’s 10 years, and we have not held this trophy. It’s been in the back of my head since last England went to India… I can appreciate the sport, I can even enjoy a normal Test match, but this series (BGT) has been my focus for quite a lot of time already, Lyon noted to Healy on the ‘Willow Talk’ podcast.
“I reckon, Australia wins this 5-0,” prophesied the 36 year old most successful error free off spinner from Australia with 530 Test wickets from 129 matches.
Nathan Lyon time at his cottage has ensured that he has made long-term observations of the batting styles of Indian batsmen since the English side’s visit to India earlier this year.
“I had a really good chat to Tom Hartley (England spinner), just about the way he went about it, when (Yashasvi) Jaiswal went after him. That’s something I picked up from him,” Lyon said. “Will Sarfaraz Khan come over here or will it be (KL) Rahul? They have got a side full of superstars”.
The off-spinner stated Australia’s top order batsmen should be able to make big hundreds if they are to put Indian bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah, under pressure.
“We need big runs. We need the guys who are talented enough to get the hundred. The likes of Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head, all the top order. I don’t want 101 or 107, I want 180 and 200”, Nathan Lyon added.
