Deep-water dogfish shark Squalus hima was found by Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) scientists at Sakthikulangara fishing harbour in Kerala along the Arabian Sea.

Squalidae is a family of spurdogs also known as Squalus which have smooth dorsal fin spines.
A team of scientists led by Bineesh K. K Scientist at the Marine Biology Regional Centre of ZSI made this discovery and it has been recently published in the journal Records of the ZSI.
“However, morphological, meristic, morphometric evidence support and so it may be described as different from other species such as S. mitsukurii and S. lalannei. The new species called Squalus hima sp.nov.” said Sweta Beura who was a lead author in that paper
From south-west coast of India two species are recorded from Indian waters off Kerala coast, namely Squalus megalops and an undescribed species very similar to Squalus lalannei but differing in many characteristics.
Squales megalops group can be recognised by distinctive characters like a small mouth almost as wide as the snout, angular short snout profile, first dorsal fin origin behind pectoral fins while without any spots on dorsal surface.
In addition Dr. Bineesh mentioned that these sharks belong to genus squalus or Centrophorus and are killed for their liver oil that happens to contain high levels of squalene (or squalane when processed for products), much sought after by pharmaceutical industries particularly high end cosmetics and anti cancerous products.
Dr Bineesh said “Fishermen from southern coasts of India Andaman & Nicobar Islands collect such families like these to make oil from their livers for pharamaceuticals , therefore finding out one more type is important for preserving this shark species,”
He added that dogfish sharks are commercially important taxa in the trade of shark fins, liver oil and meat. Squalus species are also sometimes caught incidentally as bycatch in fisheries targeting other species.
Director of ZSI Dhriti Banerjee described it as a new dogfish shark species and mentioned that Survey is carrying out deep sea habitat explorations upto depths of 1000-3000 metres to understand the species diversity of sharks and rays under special programme on Deep Ocean Mission by Ministry of Earth Sciences.
His group has studied sharks and rays from about 1000m depth zones along Indian coast, for next phase we will be exploring the species diversity upto 2000 m., Dr. Bineesh informed.
Based on the studies carried out during surveys conducted to assess the diversity and distribution of deep-sea sharks from the Indian EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone), this paper describes a new species Squalus hima from 13 specimens collected from southwest coast of India.
