Zee Entertainment Enterprises, a co-producer of the film ‘Emergency’ starring Kangana Ranaut, informed the Bombay High Court on October 3, 2024, that it was in discussions with the Censor Board regarding the certificate issuance for the movie.
The film, which was to be released physically on 6 September, has been caught up in a tussle with the censor board which is more formally known as the Central Board of Film Certification due to the negative, or non-issuance of, certificate for the release of the movie.
On Thursday, senior counsel Sharan Jagtiani told a Division Bench of Justices B P Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla that the issues are being resolved.
“I think those are very much coming to rest between the CBFC and respondent-2 (co-producer of her Ms. Ranaut’s Manikarnika Films,” Mr. Jagtiani said.
The Bench posted the matter for further hearing for Friday.
As of Monday, the Bench had been told by the board of film certification that Manikarnika, Ms. Ranaut’s production company had consented to the cuts.
Zee Entertainment Enterprises, the co producer on the film has moved HC seeking order and direction to the CBFC to grants order for the film “Emergency” directed by Kangana Ranaut.
The biopic stirs an issue as Sikh organizations such as the Shiromani Akali Dal, have raised objections stating that the film does a disservice to the community as well as the events depicted in it. In its plea, Zee Entertainment had claimed that the cbfc has already made the certificate for the movie but is not giving it out.
Ranaut has directed and produced the film, in which she plays Indira Gandhi, and has been in the news for accusing the festival of censors bfc, of holding up the certification process in order to delay the release.
Zee spare entertainment also alleged that the reason for withholding the certificate was purely political and was because of the elections round the corner in Haryana.
The Bench had then wondered as to why the ruling party BJP would act against Ms. Ranaut who was a BJP MP herself.
