In her run against Donald Trump for president in November, Nancy Pelosi, who is influential in the Democratic Party has approved US Vice President Kamala Harris. This happened after President Joe Biden’s unexpected decision to withdraw from running for president in 2024.
After her first appearance since Biden’s announcement at the White House ceremony, the 59-year old Harris lavished praise on the outgoing leader over his “unrivaled” accomplishments devoid of any note of triumphalism. With Pelosi’s support however, she is now a major contender for the Democratic nomination.
“As I endorse Vice-President Kamala Harris as the next President of United States with greatest joy and boundless optimism about our country’s bright future,” Pelosi published this statement on X.
Although there have been calls for an open primary, many leading Democrats have lined up behind Harris and set up a fast nomination process. On Sunday, Biden – whose poor show during a debate with Trump made him drop out of the presidential race – supported her as he withdrew from race at 81 years old.
Various figures in including Bill Clinton and other legislators have endorsed Harris but it is worth noting that former President Barack Obama has not yet made known his endorsement.
Harris’ campaign received $81 million from donors within 24 hours of Biden stepping aside. The campaign stated that this was “the biggest one-day haul” ever recorded in presidential history adding that sixty percent (888 thousand) donated their first amount towards the 2024 election campaign.
