On Wednesday, Hamas announced that Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political office of Hamas was killed in Tehran, Iran along with his bodyguard.
The Islamist faction mourned the death of Haniyeh in a statement saying he died when ‘a perfidious Israeli raid on his residence in Tehran’. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) statement read: “With condolences to Palestine and its heroic people, to the world of Islam and its Mujahideen warriors, and to Iran’s noble nation, this morning [Wednesday], Tehran home of Mr. Dr. Ismail Haniyeh whose position is Head of Political Bureau of Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades was targeted; as a result of this operation he together with one more guardsman were martyred”.
Although no group has claimed responsibility for the assassination, Israel is being suspected. This development comes just after Israel vowed to strike at Haniyeh and other leaders within Hamas as a revenge for an attack by the group on 7th October which left about1,200 dead and close to 250 hostages.
