On Tuesday (August 20, 2024), the West Bengal government requested a speedy hearing at the Supreme Court concerning its appeal against the decision of the Calcutta High Court which nullified OBC status of several castes dominated by Muslim groups in the State to give them reservation in public sector jobs and admission into state-run educational institutions.
The SC has set August 27 as a date for hearing these prayers.
Refers to admissions
The HC verdict must be put on hold, said senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the state government before Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra because it is affecting candidates that have passed NEET-UG, 2024 exams.
“HC’s judgment should not stand… scholarship issues remain pending while NEET admissions are being affected,” “Mr. Sibal argued requesting that it be heard during the day.”
According to one of counsels representing Other Backward Classes (OBC) panel of the State, students are queuing up for authentication of their OBC status so as to get admission into medical colleges and other institutions.
“We will hear it on Tuesday [August 27],” answered CJ.
