According to the family of a male Agniveer from Maharashtra who died while on active duty last year, they have received an assistance of ₹1.08 crore from the government.
This came after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated on Monday that an Agniveer pays one’s life for his country, gets a compensation of ₹1 crore.
Speaking after Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi referred to the Agnipath military recruitment scheme and said that the government calls them “shaheed (martyr)”.
Agniveer Akshay Gawate died in Siachen, Pimpalgaon Sarai, Buldhana district, Maharashtra on October 21st 2023 while performing his duties as an Agniveer.
His father Lakshman Gawate stated on Monday evening here that “we got Rs 48 lakh as his insurance cover, Rs 50 lakh from central government and Rs 10 lakh from state.”
In addition he also asked for a government job for Akshay’s sister?
He answered reporters’ queries about what he got as compensation for losing his son.
On June 14th 2022 there was an announcement concerning the Agnipath scheme aimed at recruiting young people aged between seventeen and a half years old and twenty-one years only during four years with prospects of maintaining twenty-five percent for another fifteen years.
The upper age limit was extended by the government later that year up to twenty three years.
