Vehicles were trapped in the debris after a landslip at Doddathapaple village in Karnataka Sakaleshpur taluk last Tuesday.
The incessant rains of the previous month have swept through Karnataka, disrupting life in several districts. According to statistics, up to now 48 people have died due to rain-related issues like lightning strikes, landslides, floods and drowning cases. It is estimated that approximately 44 ha of agriculture and horticultural crops has been affected by rains this year. Electrical infrastructure was also damaged.
Flood warnings in Mysuru, Kodagu, Shivamogga and Chamarajanagar are on the rise as many dams across the State reach full capacity thereby increasing outflow for controlling water levels. I had a hard time understanding this one. Roads and homes have been submerged by robust rivers.
Landslips have been a problem in Coastal and Malnad Karnataka too. For example eight people died at Shirur in Uttara Kannada district due to one such incident. Connectivity between coastal Karnataka and Bengaluru has also been interrupted due to NH 75’s landslide at Doddathappale, Sakleshpur taluk region. Also other highways could suffer from landslides anytime.
We will talk about how the monsoon season went so far: In addition we will examine what districts did or their contingency plans for annual flooding: Finally, perennial challenges faced by the state during rainy seasons will be looked into.
