A crowded Rhode Island beach was invaded by multitudes of dragonflies last Saturday causing fear among the visitors.
Woven between umbrellas and chairs, a dense cloud of these bugs navigated through the beach, around the faces and legs of tourists.
Upon X’s, release WCVP-TV-Boston posted a video on social media site which sparked mixed feelings from their audience.
“Would you stay or go? Dragonflies swarmed a busy Rhode Island beach on Saturday — you can hear children screaming as they flew past,” read the post appended with the video.
“I would remain. And I would pry fly swatter out of girl’s hand. I would let her know that they don’t possess stingers as well as are not poisonous or dangerous to humans. In case dragonflies feel threatened they bite in self defense but their bites are weak; only slight injuries may result,” responded a participant
“A lot of kids need to toughen up! Today’s kids would not have survived back in 70’s. Really? Dragonflies?” said another one.
According to WBUR, summer breeding seasons for dragonfly swarms come about due to weather disturbances or human activities that stir up smaller insects upon which they feed.
