SpaceX Polaris Dawn achieved another milestone as one of the crew members played the violin, which is for the first time done in space.
Sarah Gills performed “Rey’s Theme,” a John Williams composition from the movie “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
Video of the extraordinary performance captures Gills floating inside the Dragon capsule, her hair defying gravity as she skillfully plays the iconic melody. While her crew members were the only ones able to hear her live performance, Gills’ violin part was synchronized with orchestras around the world to create a complete musical experience.

The solo, titled “Harmony of Resilience,” was the result of a collaboration between Polaris Dawn, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and El Sistema. The goal of this unique concert was to harness the power of music to uplift the spirits of the children supported by these organizations, showcasing the resilience and hope that can be found even in the most challenging circumstances, New York Post reported.
Polaris Dawn dubbed the solo “Harmony of Resilience,” which was scheduled in a partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and El Sistema as a way to use music to boost the spirits of the children helped by the organizations.
The Polaris Dawn crew, aboard SpaceX’s Dragon capsule, safely returned to Earth on Sunday after creating the history with world’s first commercial spacewalk.
Tech billionaire Jared Isaacman led the mission alongside two SpaceX engineers and a retired Air Force pilot. The crew travelled higher than anyone has since Nasa’s Apollo moon missions, with their Dragon spacecraft reaching a peak altitude of 875 miles (1,408 kilometers), surpassing both the International Space Station and the Hubble Space Telescope.
This was Isaacman’s second mission with SpaceX, following his 2021 flight, which raised more than $250 million for St. Jude. The Polaris Dawn mission set a new altitude record for human spaceflight since the Apollo era, underscoring the growing capabilities of private space exploration.
During the mission, Isaacman reflected on the view from space, saying, “Back at home, we all have a lot of work to do, but from here — it looks like a perfect world.”
