On 12th June, the state unit of Congress in Uttar Pradesh demanded that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra should contest Lok Sabha elections against Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Varanasi. However, the party chose to ask her campaign throughout India.

It is only one day ago that Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader said this in Raebareli during a rally; if she contested from this seat (Varanasi) with Modi PM, he would not have been able to make more than 2-3 lakh votes than her.

Congress had nominated Mr. Rai for Varanasi Parliamentary seat and was defeated by PM Modi with a margin of 1,52,513 votes. In this regard Rai told PTI Videos in Lucknow “We wanted Priyanka Gandhi to fight against Modi in Varanasi. But the party did not take a call on it because she had to move around the country during the polls.”

This year’s margin of victory for Mr. Modi was smaller compared to when he won by 4,79,505 and 3,71,784 votes respectively in general elections of 2019 and 2014. On his part Rai noted that Congress along with its INDIA bloc allies will undertake a ‘dhanyavad yatra’ as gratitude towards Indians who supported them whereas the INDIA bloc parties plan to unite in readiness for UP assembly election in 2027 where they will oust BJP.

In Varanasi people made BJP sweat also INDIA coalition partners made them sweat,” explained Rai.

In comparison to last time round when BJP stormed into power winning an overwhelming majority in Uttar Pradesh by bagging 62 out of total seats of about eighty , they were trimmed down and satisfied themselves with only thirty three seats as at now.
