A US police officer has been discharged for laughing and making derogatory remarks after an Indian student was killed by a police car last year. On January 23rd, 2014, Jahnavi Kandula, aged 23 from Andhra Pradesh, was crossing the road at a zebra crossing when she got knocked down by the police vehicle.
She was doing her Masters at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus.
According to Sue Rahr who is the interim chief of Seattle police department while firing Daniel Auderer, his “unfeeling laughter and wicked comments” caused great anguish in Kandula’s family leading to lack of trust in law enforcers by public members.
The officer audited for this incident was called Auderer and he made the comments on this conversation. While checking out body cam footage; “Yeah just write a cheque. Just yeah(laughs), $11,000. She was 26 anyway. She had limited value.” After that, he “giggled hard for four seconds,” according to a disciplinary report.
