Following military exercise by china surrounding Taiwan in two days, a US bipartisan delegation of lawmakers arrived in Taipei to have talks on US-Taiwan relations with Lai Ching-te administration that had just been sworn in as president, said Taiwan News.
The delegation including Michael McCaul who is the Republican chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee landed in Taipei for a week-long talk which will conclude on May 30th.
The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) press release indicates that during their visit, the delegation would be involved in discussion about trade and investment, regional security, U.S. –Taiwan relations and other aspects of mutual interest.
McCaul has stated that this week’s trip of bipartisan group “sends a signal to the Chinese Communist Party that the United States stands with the people of Taiwan and will work to maintain the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.”
Last week, Congress member Michael McCaul announced the visit which includes other stops throughout Indo-Pacific region as well as larger visit according to American Institute in Taiwan
According to Taiwai News, McCaul from Texas, will be accompanied by congress members such as Chrissy Houlahan from Pennsylvania; Andy Barr from Kentucky; Joe Wilson from South Carolina; Young Kim and Jimmy Panetta both California representatives
They are expected to meet with President Elect Lai Ching-te who was inaugurated one week ago today.
This congressional visit also comes after China completed two day military exercise around Taiwan on Saturday.
In words of U.S. Representative Jimmy Panetta “this necessary partnership” is seen through this trip shows between Taiwan and America.
Panetta said he looks forward to congratulating President Lai Ching-te on his inauguration and continuing building up our country’s relationship.”
