On Wednesday this week, medical technology giant Medtronic inaugurated its first big-scale IT capability center outside US soil in Telangana’s capital city Hyderabad.
The American firm said that it will spend $60 million to develop the Global IT (GIT) center located along with Medtronic Engineering & Innovation Center (MEIC) in the city which is expected to create 300 jobs over next three to five years after industries and information technology minister D. Sridhar Babu launched the facility at an event attended by U.S consul general Jennifer Larson among others.
Cutting edge technologies such as Cloud Engineering, Data Platforms, Digital Health applications, Hyper automation and AI/ML among others will be some of GIT Centre main development areas with cloud competences DevOps, Advanced Analytics & Visualization; Integration & Middleware; Full Stack Engineering; RPA: Robotic Process Automation; Process Mining & Data Mining – Agile Program Management – Process Excellence/Business Analysis – IT Security/Compliance being other talent domains.
Drive growth
According to a release from the firm, through these capabilities, GIT Centre will enhance productivity while mitigating risks as well as driving growth for healthcare technology for instance.
Rashmi Kumar who is a senior vice president at med tech major had this to say about India having one of best talent pools for IT that we hope to leverage our skillset from it. Speaking during opening day media briefing she added that “It is,” adding that the centre is part of MDT’s plans to build up a global workforce. The bulk of its IT staff are based in America, with around 2000 members.
GIT would enormously benefit from the experience and established presence of MEIC in Hyderabad which is one of the strongholds for medtech R&D; particularly while executing its recruitment plan. There could be some areas where GIT and MEIC overlaps.
MEIC to fast track hiring
In 2020 Medtronic spent $160m to set up the Engineering & Innovation Centre in Hyderabad, which was later increase by another $300m. The Minister opened up the expanded R&D facility this February. “We are now working on a fast-track hiring process for over 400 people,” said Divya Joshi, Vice-president and MEIC Site Leader explaining how we will increase our headcount to 1,500.
The GIT center will “contribute to innovations that enhance our global IT capabilities so as to provide high quality healthcare solutions,” he added.
Vibrant ecosystem in Telangana
“Not just reputed companies such as Medtronic but also countless other firms choosing to double down their existing investments here is an evidence that a vibrant innovation ecosystem is growing well.” He had earlier said when addressing us this morning. This is a sign that shows that progressive policies are paying off and there is no lack of talent pool within our State for anybody who needs it. The government remains committed to the growth of medical technologies sector and extend every support.
