The Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recommended the disbandment of the 17th Lok Sabha on June 5, according to sources.
After that meeting at his residence, Mr. Modi made a formal recommendation to President Droupadi Murmu and also handed over his resignation, they said.
A top source told PTI: “The Union Cabinet has recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha.”
Prime Minister Modi called on President Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan and tendered his resignation along with the Union Council of Ministers. The Rashtrapati Bhawan added that this gesture was accepted by the President who encouraged both prime minister and council of ministers in their offices until another Government is formed.
During this cabinet meeting, sources said, election results were discussed while a meeting for that purpose followed involving Council ministers.
June 16 marks end period for current 17th Lok Sabha term.
While Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alone secured 240 seats, thereby making National Democratic Alliance (NDA) majority party in a house with total membership of 543; Congress which is its primary opponent managed only ninety nine seats.
