The Tungabhadra reservoir near Hosapet in the Vijayanagara district has been filled with over 61 tmcft of water in the last 20 days due to heavy rainfall especially in its catchment areas like Western Ghats in Karnataka.
According to reports from officials, storage rose from 6.78 tmcft on July 1 at an inflow rate of 12,735 cusecs to 68.04 tmcft on July 20 with a flow rate of 102,744 cusecs.
The reservoir got over 36 tmcft for seven days and also received another one over the last three days because it rained heavily. The full tank level (FTL) is 1633 ft., however yesterday afternoon at four o’clock, the water levels were recorded as being at an elevation of about sixteen hundred and twenty two feet above sea level.
As per information received from authorities at eight am today, people were warned against venturing into the downstream of Tungabhadra river below the dam since this could be done even today depending on input flows. In addition to this, both Tunga and Bhadra dams located in Shivamogga district are brimming but release of water from them can enhance discharge into Tungabhadra reservoir.
The authorities have asked people living downstream along River Tungabhadra to keep watch and prepare for any eventualities that may occur.
