Donald Trump’s Truth Social account posted a video on Monday, which has sparked controversy with hypothetical headlines about a “unified reich” if he wins the 2024 presidential elections. The language drew strong criticism from the incumbent
Joe Biden’s campaign and resulted in widespread anger.
“What happens after Donald Trump wins? What’s next for America?” asks a voiceover in the 30-second clip, while flashing several imaginary headlines promoting American prosperity such as “Economy booms!” and “Border is closed.” However, there is one headline that caught my attention: “The creation of a unified reich.”
The term “reich” often refers to Germany’s Third Reich associated with Adolf Hitler of Nazis, even though no direct reference to Nazis is made in this clip. There are also references to World War I in this video and the “unified reich” headline seems like it’s a nod at Germany’s unification of 1871.
According to Politico, before posting the video, nobody working for Trump realized that it contained the word “reich.” Considering his previous statements and actions seen by some as provocative, this has fueled more aversion towards it.
Trump has recently been portraying Biden as an inept leader who fails to curb anti-Semitism during increased tensions caused by the Gaza war. Trump himself has been accused of using Nazi-like rhetoric calling immigrants “vermin” who were “poisoning the blood” of America.
Trump always makes controversial remarks. In Virginia in 2017, he described some neo-Nazi marchers during violent protests as “very fine people”. These demonstrators had also chanted words like ‘Jews will not replace us’. Moreover, sometimes he shares meals together with white nationalists at his Florida estate.
The video was quickly and unequivocally responded by Biden campaign. James Singer said “Donald Trump isn’t joking around. He is outright telling America what he would do upon regaining power: ruling as a dictator over a ‘unified reich’.” He added, “Quoting from Hitler’s book Mein Kampf while warning of a massacre if you lose is the kind of paranoid behavior you get from somebody who knows that his extremist vision of disorder, disunity and violence has been regularly rejected by democracy.”
Already, this video has caught significant attention and created controversy thus further strengthening the deep divide in the American political spectrum. His actions and statements continue to be both supported and condemned amidst Trump’s ongoing post-presidential political trajectory.
