In a move to effectively utilise its unsold housing units, the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) has decided to allot more than 3,800 such units at two projects in Chennai and one in Coimbatore to the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation (TNPHC) for conversion into police quarters.

According to official sources, as many as 3,882 housing units of the TNHB at Ambattur, Ayapakkam, Sholinganallur, and MKB Nagar projects in Chennai and Ganapathy in Coimbatore remain unsold.

In Chennai, out of the 2,730 housing units constructed at Ambattur and Ayapakkam to cater to the needs of low-income groups, 1,956 units remain unsold since the completion of the project in 2020. Similarly, a total of 1,501 out of 2,500 housing units constructed for low, middle, and high-income groups in two projects at Sholinganallur are unsold.

Considering that these housing units have been unoccupied for quite some time and the TNPHC requires nearly 3,800 houses to be allotted to police personnel as rent-free quarters, the board has decided to allot the unsold units to the corporation, said G.S. Sameeran, Managing Director, TNHB.

The TNHB has completed an initial round of discussion with officials from the Finance and Police departments, and it has been decided to allot nearly 1,800 units at Ambattur and Ayapakkam, 1,000 units at Sholinganallur, and 150 units at Ganapathy to the TNPHC, he said.

A field-level inspection has been completed by the senior officials of the Police department. The rate at which these unsold units would be allotted to the TNPHC is under discussion and it will be decided shortly by the board, he added.
