Tragic cases: Esra Haynes and Sarah Mescall

The most sympathizing victim is Esra Haynes, a 13 year old girl from Melbourne, Australia and died on 31st March 2023. After doing chrome as a part of a sleep tobacco back. Haynes damaged her brain and suffered a cardiac arrest; finally, she deteriorated over one week in the hospital and died, reported Dexerto.com. Her parents, Paul and Andrea Haynes, have since been protesting against chroming. Paul Haynes, in one of his television interviews in Australia, said that it was painful, “Esra would have never done this if she knew that there was some kind of consequence. That it can take your life.” And Andrea Haynes said, “The ripple effect is that this is devastating. It is such that we do not have a child to bring home.”

A similar incident happened to 14 licensed Sarah Mescall of Ireland who died in 2023 September too engaging in the chroming challenge. Mescall reportedly fell into a coma and died later after being medicated into an artificial coma. Irish authorities are looking into the connection between the girl’s passing and the rest of the world’s trends.

TikTok’s answer and a parallel threat

It strains credulity that TikTok claims that dangerous content will be removed, in the face of these events, even the ones which go against the Policies of the Application. This platform came forward, assuring its users, “We will continue to focus in soliciting & enforcing guidelines in our community with the support of expert partners & offering safety measures to those in need.” How Offensive Jokester Splits is especially compelling regardless of all worries.

However, the trend has by no means been reversed. In March 2024, an 11-year old boy Tommy-Lee who had spent the night at a friend’s place, suffered death after trying out the chroming challenge. Her grandmother Kendra Mason is one of many who have twitted that TikTok should be stopped whilst others clamour for more age control on social media, “As long as we are calling for TikTok to be banned, children below the age of sixteen should not be allowed to create accounts on any social media.”

Recent cases highlight risks

There are some more disgusting news reports regarding Tegan, a twelve-year-old British girl who was admitted to the hospital trying chroming, or 12-year-old Sass, who suffered cardiac arrest coughing out deodorant. These two cases also highlight the great nuises which pervades this whole trend. Nichola King, cesar’s mom, reanimated the bottom from Nikolas seizure and beseeched other mothers to be more watchful.

Ongoing efforts and future concerns

The ‘chroming’ phenomenon is not the only risky online trend, but since people engage in it, it further emphasizes the importance of guardians knowing about and putting measures in place. If TikTok is making efforts to eliminate such content, the increasing number of the regrettable outcomes makes it necessary to remember the dangers of viral tasks.

As of this point in time, families and responsible social services remain in red alert, making attempts to cop potential further tragedies and save weak young users from dangerous web-browsing trends.
