According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, the southwest monsoon has set in over northern parts of West Bengal and may result in thunderstorms and heavy showers across the State during next few days.
“The rainfall is likely to be heavy to very heavy over North Bengal from June 1st week. The MeT department has also sounded yellow alert for heavy rain (between 7 cm to 11 cm) in Coochbehar, Alipurduar Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and some parts of North and South Dinajpur during June 1-4. “An orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall (between 7 cm and 20 cm) has been issued for Coochbehar and Alipurduar districts on June 2,” added the statement.
The Meteorological department also warned that due to this excess downpour there could be landslides at many places especially hilly areas. This may also cause rise in water level in rivers like Teesta, Jaldhaka, Sankosh and Torsa leading damage to horticulture and standing crops/vegetables etc. as well as temporary water logging in low lying areas including underpass roads due to heavy rains.
