MADRID: On Saturday, Spanish police said that three pro-Russian hackers had been arrested for allegedly carrying out cyberattacks against Spain and other Nato countries for terrorist purposes.
The Civil Guard said the suspects were detained over their alleged involvement in distributed denial of service (DDoS) cyber attacks on public institutions and strategic sectors.
Whether the three suspects who have not been named have charged or detained has not been mentioned
According to it, these cyber-attacks were conducted on websites of public as well as private organizations belonging to government sectors, critical infrastructures and essential services in countries supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia.
In a video shared on social media platform X, police officers were seen raiding one suspect’s house where a Soviet era hammer and sickle flag was hanging on the wall.
Through a statement, “These computer attacks have been organized by the hacktivist group No Name 057 (16), (which started) after invasion of Ukraine by Russia and (which has been) one of the most active”, says the Civil Guard.
“In their own founding manifesto, this group acknowledges that they ‘will respond proportionately in response to the hostile and openly anti-Russian actions of Western Russophobes’.”
According to police, these arrests took place in Manacor which is located on Mallorca Island (Balearic Islands), Huelva, and Seville that are situated southern part of Spain.
Police said an investigation into this was still ongoing.
