On Saturday, there were expectations of demonstrations in Paris and other cities in France to protest against the far-right RN’s high performance in European elections held last Sunday.
According to police, 350,000 demonstrators should take part while 21,000 officers had been mobilized following calls by trade unions, student groups and rights organizations for rallies against the anti-immigration eurosceptic party RN in view of upcoming French parliamentary elections.
The organizers expected over 150 demonstrations across the country centered on Marseille, Toulouse, Lyon and Lille among other places.
In Paris where up to 100,000 people were expected to turn out a march will set off at 1200 GMT from Place de La Republique going through Bastille to Nation.
For this reason Emmanuel Macron called for a snap legislative election in two rounds on June 30 and July 7 after his centrists’ coalition was beaten by RN in European Parliament polls conducted last week.
Initially released opinion polls have predicted that the far right party would win majority during parliamentary election thereby taking power.
A poll carried out for Le Point magazine projected that RN would be ahead with 29.5% of votes after first round of voting for parliament, followed closely by popular front which is a union between various leftist parties who got only 28.5%.
While Macron’s centrist camp was pegged at around 18 percent.
Two surveys placed left group not very far behind RN but still ahead of Macron’s formation.
