The Hill reported that a number of House Republicans were expressing doubts about the former US president Donald Trump’s choice of Senator JD Vance as his running mate. According to them, it could hurt the party during the November polls.
Trump’s withdrawal from 2024 presidential race has made him a focus of attention. The President is expected to be democratic nominee in 2024 after he stepped down unexpectedly from politics and rallied his party.
“Among all choices, he was the worst one. I thought it was not possible but it happened,” said one House Republican. “He is anti-Ukraine, even more populist than Trump; so, he won’t make any difference on their ticket but will stir up Tramp’s supporters instead,” The Hill website quoted this person.
Another House Republican expressed similar sentiments saying, “I think if you were to ask many people around this building, 9 out of 10 on our side would say he’s the wrong pick. He’s going to do serious damage.”
A third House Republican suggested that Vance as Vice President Harris could be blamed if Trump lost in November. “The prevailing sentiment is if Trump loses, [it’s] because of this pick,” the lawmaker said. “It doesn’t help.”
Biden’s exit from the race and his endorsement for Harris have caused greater consternation among some GOP members than anything else so far. They grow concerned with each passing day about an African-American woman becoming president versus a white man representing America overseas.
According to one representative there are major disagreements within the Republican conference over Vance. “I was concerned the whole time, but now it’s really concerning. It doesn’t make it any easier.”
Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley and South Dakota Governor Kristi. Noem were toute at different times as likely contenders for vice presidency but they did not make final cut. Some Republicans wanted someone diverse as opposed Kamala Harris candidacy hence Haeley an Noem were potential candidates.
“He wouldn’t be my first pick,” one Republican admit. “I thought we were going to have a female candidate, but they quickly dismissed that idea. Nikki Haley would’ve been great, but he’s never going to pick her because she ran against him. Kristi shot her puppy.”
“Who can rally women on the [Republican] ticket?” another Republican asked. “And right now, I’m not sure Vance is that person.”
