Telangana Government Advisor (SC, ST, OBC & Minorities) Mohammed Ali Shabbir has stated that After legal consultation, the state government will weigh the option of prohibiting the release of Kangana Ranauts most recent feature film ‘Emergency’. This is after some members of the Telangana Sikh Society came to express their dissatisfaction against what they called undue and distorted representation of their community in a new film by Kangana Ranaut that is slated for release in early September.
On 29th August 2024, a 19 member delegation composed of inspirational working women and former IPS officer Tej Kaur Menon and her group supports with Mr Shabbir has expressed sensitivity of Sikh population in the films that is only 2 percent of Telanganas population during dissolution in Mr Shabbir’s office.
The delegation further argued that the movie betrays the Sikh Community as refugees and terrorists who are anti-national and this they found to be inappropriate and damaging to the image of the Sectional community. Noting that Sikhs constitute 12 percent of the military personnel of the country with many laying down their lives, more so the Sikh young people were more agitated with the advertisement of the movie than with its content.
“Trailers that are released before the movie release show the Sikh community in the negative light in such a way that a false narrative is created.”
‘This is something which is not acceptable,’ Menon remarked during the meeting.
In retaliation, Shabbir Ali held A. Revanth Reddy, the Chief Minister of the state, accountable for the protection of the rights of political minorities and appealed to ban the film from being shown in Telangana state as there could be some consequent violence leading to besmirching of the minoritize.
