Fire safety alarms, smoke detectors in some of the Telangana government hospitals are not in working condition. In some hospitals they have not even been installed. This was one of the worrying findings of 10 Task Force teams formed to inspect the fire safety measures, equipment, drug supply at the hospitals. 

The teams, formed on the directions of Health Minister C. Damodar Rajanarasimha, presented their findings to him at a meeting held in Hyderabad on Thursday (December 12, 2024) to address issues with maintenance of equipment, effective drug supply and other aspects were discussed. 

Mr. Narasimha directed officials to provide all hospitals with fire alarms, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers. A dedicated officers would be appointed for each hospital to regularly inspect the fire safety measures.

A decision was taken to establish a centralised integrated monitoring system. A central portal to monitor drugs and equipment would be set up. Mr. Narasimha directed officials to prepare an essential equipment list on the lines of essential medicines list. He said that defunct equipment have to be repaired between two and four days. Orders were issued to create a post for chief biomedical engineer and to appoint at least one biomedical engineer for each district on a temporary basis immediately.
