The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai on Tuesday (August 13, 2024) said the party would boycott the Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi’s tea party on the occasion of Independence Day on August 15, 2024, alleging he had consistently tried to obstruct the functioning of the democratically elected government in the State.
In a statement, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said while Article 163 of Indian Constitution states that “the Executive Power of every state shall be vested in the Governor who shall exercise it either directly or through officers subordinate to him,” Mr. Ravi has been disapprovingly ignoring whatever that came from Tamil Nadu Cabinet.
“He has prolonged approval for over twelve Bills which have been passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislature for quite some time now and constitutionally he should have assented these bills or return them to Assembly together with his opinion thereon. The moment these kinds of bills are returned back by Assembly after repassage whether by way of amendment or otherwise, as per Article 200of Constitution he is obliged to give consent,” said TNCC President.
“However, India’s Supreme Court challenged this Governor and condemned his acts which contradicted constitutionalism leading to problems for Tamilnadu Government’s approach,” he added.
He also talked about how FMCI never appointed K. Ponmudy as an M.L.A when his case was stayed by apex court last year speaking to reporters at UDHR meeting what right does Governor have to return NEET exemption Bill enacted against rural people? Asked K.Selvaperunthagai TNCC president
The governor made many statements which according to Mr Selvaperunthagai do not correspond “to feelings of Tamils.”
As per him, Mr.Ravi had made public remarks disparaging secularism and refused some candidates recommended by Tamil Nadu in appointment Vice Chancellors in their universities, which resulted in retention of 20 Bills by him.
