According to Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Minister K.N. Nehru, The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will build a huge council hall at a cost of approximately ₹75 crore to accommodate the proposed increase in the number of councillors from 200 to 300 in the city, after the delimitation of wards as a result of new villages merging with it.
Mr. Nehru while replying to the debates relating to demands for MAWS Department announced various projects on the floor of legislative assembly including that work was expected to be completed by now on merger of different villages with urban areas.
“The population in the city is estimated at 89 lakh, and is further increasing. Once delimitation is done, it may lead to an increment in the number of councillors from 200 up to 300. Delimitation of wards would help address these problems encountered by larger populations in several parts of town particularly those located within Chennai”. The Minister said.
He added that this new council hall would be built into Ripon Buildings (the headquarters of Chennai Corporation) as part celebrations for Kalaignar centenary.
Others include footpaths, STEM park, pump for floodwater
A health walkway along MKB Nagar Central Avenue, Meenambal Salai, Sathyamurthy Nagar Main Road, Ritherdon Road, R.A. Puram Second Main Road, Nanganallur 4th 5th and 6th Main Roads and Old Thiru Vi Ka Bridge are among some f them.
Based on a trial basis, Besant Nagar already has one such constructed by GCC which drew large numbers from its neighborhood according to him.
The corporation will also create a STEM Park aimed at educating children on science technology environment mathematics this park will cost around five Crores at Chennai
The estimate includes construction costs amounting to ₹18 crore for fifteen (15) flood prone areas where the GCC will also build a huge sump to pump flood water.
The Chennai Corporation will renovate Anna Nagar Tower Park to an international standard on PPP mode. To enhance ground water recharge, sponge parks will be developed in fifty locations.
Furthermore, Mr. Nehru stated that the abattoir at Perambur would be modernised and cost about ₹45 crore. The Chennai Corporation has also proposed constructing LPG crematoria at seven points of ₹12 crore each.
The city is getting 14 new parks and six playgrounds for an approximate sum of ten crores. Restoring Schools of the Chennai Corporation will cost rupees thirty five whereas twenty crores shall cover construction expenses for sixteen new school buildings in the city.
On top of this, the civic body intends to purchase 500 battery vehicles among other things like truck mounted cranes and 2,500 bins for solid waste management.
At Ennore High Road, over Kodungaiyur Canal and Tamilar Street respectively as well as three bridges connecting East Coast Road (ECR) with Rajiv Gandhi Salai (OMR), said Mr. Nehru who further added that three others would also be erected as a means of decongesting traffic between those two roads.
