Amidst a water crisis, locals at Sanjay Camp, Chanakyapuri collect water from a tanker on June 12, 2024 in New Delhi Government.

On June 12th, the Supreme Court heavily criticized the Delhi Government for having tanker mafia and wasting of water in the city, and asked it what steps it took against them.

If the Delhi Government cannot deal with people who own tankers illegally, we will ask the Delhi Police to do so,” a bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Prasanna B. Varale warned the government.

“Why were false statements made before this court where does water come from Himachal Pradesh going in delhi? There is so much spillage, tanker mafias etc.. what measures have you taken in this regard?

People are suffering; we are watching images on every news channel. What measures have you taken to control water wastage if water scarcity is a recurring problem in summers,” stated orally by the Bench.

Advocate Shadan Farasat, appearing for the Delhi government said that there is action including massive disconnection of water supplies so that excess water wastage is stopped.

Delhi government has been instructed by top court to file a report on what actions they have taken over lost waters. The matter shall be taken up on Thursday.

The apex court is currently hearing an application filed by Delhi seeking a direction to Haryana to release additional waters supplied by Himachal Pradesh to Delhi during its current crisis.
