The 18 fishermen who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy.

As batch of 18 fishermen who set out to sea on a mechanised vessel from Karaikal on Sunday were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy in the late hours on Monday on charges of trespassing into the island nation waters while fishing. Fifteen among them hailed from Karaikal district, two others from Nagapattinam district and one fisherman from Mayiladuthurai district in Tamil Nadu.
Fisheries Department sources in Karaikal said the 18 fishermen left Karaikal fishing harbour at around 10 p.m. on Sunday. They were arrested in the late hours on Monday by the Sri Lankan Navy.
The names of the arrested fishermen were given as V. Kalaimani (46), S. Silambarasan (34), K. Sudheen (23), K. Raman (37), M. Ponnaiyan (38), P. Poovarasan (26), S. Manickavelu (69), R. Akash (25), T. Sakthivel (33), S. Vinith Kumar (30), B. Kamalesh (23), V. Sivakumar (41), C. Arumugam (44), K. Jayamani (18), P. Mohan Kumar (25)- all hailing from Karaikal district, R. Tamilmani (30) and S. Rathinavel (55) – both of Nagapattinam district and S. Selvanathan (32) of Mayiladuthurai district. The arrested fishermen were taken to the island nation for inquiry, the sources added.
