Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal’s film Tu Hai Meri Kiran looks threatening legal action as it is now seeking redress for alleged copyright infringement. The film has been creating quite a stir in the Indian entertainment space however, it has taken a fresh spin as it is involved in a legal tussle that could determine its fate and potential release.
The Allegations: Copyright Infringement Claims by Adlabs
The trouble seems to have commenced when Adlabs – a major film production house accused the makers of Tu Hai Meri Kiran of committing copyright breaches of their projects Caller (2011) and Call (2019). Adlabs maintain that their film in the making has too many similarities with their film which they have the copyright over.
Within a period of time, legal action was taken against the producer of the film, Vishal Rana and Echelon Productions by Adlabs because of these claims. They have lodged a complaint with The Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC) claiming that Tu Hai Meri Kiran violates their IP laws derived from previous movies within their control.
Legal Notices and Escalation
Adlabs had already served legal notices to Echelon Productions with a demand to release the script of Tu Hai Meri Kiran and substantiate the similarity accusations made before approaching the IFTPC. No further permission was also given to any Third Party right holders related to the movie. Adlabs has now taken radical steps and filed a formal complaint to the IFTPC to seek justice as the matter has not been resolved to all parties’ satisfaction.
Impact on the Film’s Release
The timeline of this dispute is very relevant to the film ‘Tu Hai Meri Kiran’ as the entire shooting schedule was done by June, in the same month as the wedding of Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal. The film had a potential market for both the actors and particularly for Sonakshi as her works in Heeramandi – The Diamond Bazaar by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Dahaad by Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar have earned her a lot of praises recently.
