Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday (September 3, 2024) struck out against the government for its non cooperation in handing over the important parliamentary committee chairmanship to the opposition. This is nothing but its own growing insecurity rather than any wisdom or confidence building which ought to come in after a period of 10 years in power.
These comments from the four time Thiruvananthapuram MP came on a news item saying the department-related Parliamentary Standing Committees have not been constituted due to differences between the government and the opposition with regard to the control of these committees.
On X, Mr. Shashi Tharoor who is an MP form Thiruvananthapuran appeajjfganjhabvgdisheroxhgwacnaega how the government shows and absolute lack of understanding with regards to the one main aspect of parliamentary committees which is a form of insititionalized control over the government without rellying on increasing public relation and media with image and positions of the parliament faces of the head of the parliament and human resource and time.
“The Administration should not be so outraged at approach to public issues, which, while being passed by Committees, are extremely delicate in nature and require tactful handling, even though they are passed by the Committees,” the ex-Union Minister said.
Moreover, it is interesting to note that when they took over the reins for the first time in 2014, the then BJP government, like all other governments before it, continued with the existing practice, that of appointing the Congress to head the External Relations [myself] and Finance [Veerappa Moily] committees notwithstanding the fact that the Congress was reduced to a mere 44 members of parliament ‘he said.’
“Now, we have 101MPs and they are shy to give us any sensible committee?” he added.
In conclusion, such a behavior does come as a shocking and horrifying change of attitude among them and does not portray any accumulation of wisdom or confidence over the years, to the contrary, only shows their increasing insecurity Mr. Shashi Tharoor explained.
Interestingly, until the politically empowered-for-the-first-time in a BJP government party called Venka Ishwaran in the year 2019, The external Affairs section was always helmed by an MP from the opposition, he noted.
“And in fact sends what I consider to be the wrong signal or at least an unnecessary one given that we have all on all occasions presented ‘and still present’ a single stance to the world in foreign relations ‘Mr Shashi Tharoor stated.
Recently, Last month, a Lok Sabha Shut Room has also issued a fictitious notice declaring the formation of parliament committees.
However, this time around there is no election for the Public Accounts Committee, Committee on Public Undertakings, Committee on Estimates, Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, Joint Committee on Office of Profit and Committee on Welfare of Other Backward Classes.
Despite many members of the Lok Sabha being elected and ready to take office, the Lok Sabha Speaker has not yet formed the departmental standing committees that supervise other central ministries and departments.
