In its decision delivered on September 2, 2024, the Supreme Court has formed a panel of a retired Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Nawab Singh to look into the complaints of the agitating farmers at Shambhu border.
Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan also ordered that the committee should meet for the first time concurrent with the order within a period of 7 days.
The ‘farmers issues’ were stated by the Supreme Court as something which must not find ways into election and only in this manner will it be approached by the team.
It was also stated by the Supreme Court that the farmers would be at ‘liberty’ to shift their non-violent protests from one place to another.
The Bench was dealing with the proposition put forth by the Haryana Government against the order of the lower court directing it to in a week’s time remove the blockade at the Shambhu border on Delhi-Ambala highway where farmers have been sitting in protest since 13 February.
Even as ‘Samyukta Kisan Morcha’ (non-political) and ‘Kisan Mazdoor Morcha’ announced in Delhi on 11 February about their plans to stage a farmers’ march in the national capital in support of their demands of having a legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP) for poor farmers and so on, the Haryana Government had erected security barricades on the Delhi – Ambala Highway.
