The Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation Limited officials on Monday opened seven gates of the Donkarayi Dam located in Alluri Sitarama Raju and released excess floodwater which was more than 1.10 lakh cusecs.
An official statement explained that this flood water is now being let out into river Sileru so that the level of the reservoir can be kept at a level below where it would cause issues in the logistics of running the hydel projects. The in-rush water is all emptied out in river Sileru which drains into Sabari river at Chintoor in the state boundary of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
People living around the Donkarayi Dam have been put on notice to evacuate on safe grounds until such time when the flood gates will be shut. Alluri Sitarama Raju District Collector A. Dinesh Kumar has urged the tourists not to proceed to the waterfalls and other sites within Sileru until further orders for the protection of the people from any risks.
