Devastating blow for Scottish National Party (SNP), Scotland’s pro-separatist party at the UK general election on Friday, almost decimated its disappearing independence movement.
Keir Starmer’s Labour party rode to power in Westminster winning majority of the Scottish seats to overturn over a decade of SNP domination.
A dreadful night for his party was confessed by senior MP Stephen Flynn who maintained his position as it lost dozens of MPs and headed for its worst result in a British general election since 2010.
The party that ruled over Wales before today has now fallen into third place in terms of seats, rendering them ineligible for coverage during Prime Minister’s Questions.
It also will miss out on public funding, and valuable positions within parliamentary select committees.
“There will have to be a lot of soul-searching as a party as a consequence of these results that have come in tonight,” said SNP leader John Swinney told the BBC.
Former leader Nicola Sturgeon called it “at the grimmer end” of her party’s expectations after polls suggested Labour could win 410 seats, giving it an overall majority of 170 in Britain as a whole.
Finance scandal –
Since dominating Scotland three times over previous UK elections and peaking with a record haul of 56 out of Scotland’s then 59 Westminster seats in 2015, the SNP had cut back to just six in London five years ago. The Liberal Democrats took one seat from them with only two others going to other parties last time round.
However south of the border there has been a resurgent Labour Party wave against Tories nationwide that added pressure on SNP which has always prided itself as being the center pole politically beyond England’s northern frontier
In breaking news we can reveal that Nigel Farage is trying to get us thrown off our position so they can lead us into fifth place while they remain comfortably lodged between Conservatives and Labour despite their best efforts. No wonder why there are so many people who have got exasperated and tired of the SNP’s 17 years rule over the devolved Scottish parliament in Edinburgh.
Critics also say that this has come at the expense of areas such as job insecurity, education and health.
Furthermore, support for the SNP has plummeted following a financial scandal which saw Sturgeon’s husband Peter Murrell being charged with embezzlement. He used to be its CEO.
Additionally, Ms. Sturgeon was detained but later released without any charges being filed against her.
Swinney only took charge in May following the resignation of Humza Yousaf after the collapse of SNP’s power-sharing deal with Scottish Greens in Edinburgh.
Yousaf was head for just over twelve months.
In case they won majority seats when votes will be counted today Thursday, Swinney pledged that he would push for new discussions about another independence referendum.
According to Labour and the Conservatives, this matter was resolved at the 2014 referendum in which 55 percent of Scottish voters chose to stay in the UK.
Although SNP lost ground, polls show that about 40% of Scotland’s population still want independence thus giving SNP some satisfaction.
