The Supreme Court on August 2nd declined to set aside the defamation lawsuit which was filed by actor-politician Divya Spandana against Asianet News Network and journalist Vishweshwar Bhat.
Spandana has filed a defamation case against Asianet News and others, accusing them of broadcasting news about Kannada actresses being caught in the cricket betting/spot fixing scandal.
She argued that her name was repeatedly mentioned on every bulletin and even her videos were seen as breaking news.
In her complaint, Spandana specifically alleged that the broadcast of those news stories made it seem like she was among those people who were implicated in the alleged cricket betting or spot fixing.
A three-judge bench of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and justices J.B. Pardiwala and Manoj Misra declined to interfere with the Karnataka High Court order refusing to quash the proceedings.
“This is a repeated mention of her (Spandana) in the bulletin – how do we quash it? We cannot hear this,” said the bench. The top court was hearing an appeal filed by Asianet New Network and others challenging the high court order.
The petitioners have produced no material before this court to show that there were any proceedings before the court against the complainant concerning her engagement or involvement in any manner in connection with cricket betting or spot fixing as per High Court.
