Sanya Malhotra’s Mrs will be the closing film at the New York Indian Film Festival in 2024
Mrs is a film, soon to be released starring Sanya Malhotra which has been generating buzz on the festival circuit and is being touted as a favourite for its exploration of domesticity and gender roles. Directed by Arati Kadav, this Hindi remake of The Great Indian Kitchen (2021), a critically acclaimed Malayalam movie, will be screened for the first time at New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) 2024 as its concluding film.
Kadav found it great that her movie was chosen to be shown at the festival. In an interview with Mid-day, she confessed that “I eagerly wait to watch films that are being showcased there every year. I consider myself extremely privileged because our film was chosen to close this platform. This opportunity availed me the occasion to reconnect with my fellow Indians not only in India but also abroad.”
In their review titled “Exotically Delicious,” they describe how Mrs uses food as a metaphor for women’s social pressures in India. The description tells about Richa – young dance teacher who falls for Diwakar – wealthy doctor, however their happily ever after turns into an acid rain as she becomes trapped in a loveless marriage where she must cook and clean and do everything that her husband demands from her sexually. In this synopsis’ metaphorical nature we can see how Richa feels stifled by her own life; it depicts life as “an overcooked and tasteless happily ever after laced with misogyny, arrogance, and stubbornness.” However difficult it becomes for Richa she doesn’t give up easily because according to this synopsis of hers “The kitchen has solution to all problems so Richa cooks splendid dishes with love and dedication refusing male dominance.”
Some talented cast members feature in Mrs. The leading actress Sanya Malhotra plays Richa. Diwaker, the domineering husband of the marriage is played by Nishant Dahiya. Not mentioning any names the cast also includes Kanwaljit Singh.
The film is produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Pammi Baweja and Harman Baweja.
