In the midst of the success of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-anticipated season called Heermandi: The Diamond Bazaar, which continues to make news, there is another interesting development. The series has been renewed for a second season 2. Yes, it will still revolve around courtesans but now with a focus on partition and Lahore tawaifs and how they landed up in Bollywood. However, it is not yet clear if any actresses from the previous season will be back.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently spoke to Variety Magazine about shooting the magnum opus as well as other challenges like time constraints etc. Nevertheless, despite the prolonged period that will be used in making these webisodes, the director promised fans that he plans for Season 2 and was supported by Netflix streaming service. Here are details of Heeramandi Season 2 given by him: “Now in Heeramandi 2 women come from Lahore to film world. They leave Lahore after the partition and most of them settled down either in Mumbai film industry or Kolkata film industry. So that journey in the bazaar remains same.”They dance and sing again but this time before only producers not nawabs so that’s why we’re thinking about planning a second season, let’s see where it goes.”
On June 3rd, the makers took to social media platforms to officially announce Season Two. A video was shot at Carter Road, Mumbai where a dazzling flash mob of 100 dancers clad in shimmering anarkalis (a traditional Indian gown) and ghungroos (anklets) danced to medley songs from the series. As audience joined singing along with them, dancers broke out into this thrilling moment informing people about new episodes that left everyone mesmerized.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali expressed his gratitude for his successful show saying,” I am grateful for love and appreciation for my show Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. It’s been a joy to see the show resonate with audiences worldwide, and I couldn’t have asked for a better partner than Netflix. I’m happy to announce that we’ll be back with season 2!”
Additionally, Monika Shergill of Netflix India further expressed her delight about this period drama’s new season saying, “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar is a testament to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ability to create breathtaking magic on screen. I’ve found it highly inspiring that viewers across the globe have fallen head over heels in love with it and made it their very own cultural phenomenon; so it’s great pleasure to announce an upcoming Season 2.”
Alongside Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Sharmin Segal as leading ladies were Shekhar Suman and Taha Shah Badussha in important roles. The series revolved around love, power and betrayal set in pre-independence era India.
