On August 10, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Maldives resulted in a meeting with the President of that country, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. New Delhi expressed its readiness to deepen India-Maldives ties for the prosperity of citizens of both countries and in general – the region.
In his first high-level visit to Maldives after Muizzu assumed office in 2023, Mr Jaishankar will spend three days resetting bilateral relations between the two neighbors.
“Had a good meeting with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Conveyed greetings of PM Narendra Modi. Committed to deepening India-Maldives ties for the benefit of our people and the region,” tweeted Jaishankar (Former Twitter) along with a photo taken during their talks.
The Indian minister’s trip comes weeks after President Muizzi visited India in June this year for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.
Maldives is one of India’s important maritime neighbours in the Indian Ocean region and under previous Male administration there was an upward trend in bilateral relations including defence and security cooperation between them.
