Heavy inflow of water to the rivers in the North Andhra region has been occurring for the last three days because of the continuity of the rain in the catchment areas located in the AP-Odisha border.
Another water flow of 15,000 cusecs was recorded on September 9, 2024, at the Narayanpur Anicut on Nagavali river which was let out early in the morning of the day. A smaller but significant water flow of 12,066 cusecs was accumulated by madduvalasa reservoir and was let off soon after warning the inhabitants of the places subject to flooding. Gotta barrage on Vamsadhara river had a water flow of 10,395 cusecs and had released the water to the sea thereon.
The total rainfall in the Srikakulam district in the period from Saturday morning to Sunday morning is 1289.8 mm. Almost all mandals had their fair share of the abnormal rains. Ranasthalam mandal got 104.8 mm, the highest rainfall among other mandals.
Significant rainfall in Laveru , Ponduru, Etcherla also led to flooding of low-lying places. Revenue and agriculture officials were asked by Srikakulam Collector Swapnil Dinkar to compile reports regarding destruction of crops and property. He added that the rains in the other mandals were being monitored and that there was only mild cause for concern.
Vizianagaram suffered damages of government and public properties due to incessant rainfall. Bothakeru-Paradi causeway was also destroyed during heavy rains in Bobbili. This has resulted in traffic snarls along the Ramabhadrapuram-Bobbili stretch.
The previous bridge was not safe as it was old and weakened against heavy loads of the vehicles. Thus collector B.R. … Andhra Pradesh after 65 years, he directed the R and B officials to take up immediate alternate measures for the traffic movement on this route. Nandigama village was the worst affected in Terlam mandal.
Roads at the juncture of Rajapulova were affected because of heavy rainfall. There was disruption of traffic movement from vizianagaram to visakhapatnam with water lodging at Rajapulova Junction. A police officer affected with the operations reported back to Vizianagaram SP Vakul Jindal additional police force in this unit was deployed on the important route to control traffic.
There was a review of the flood situation by minister for MSME Kondapalli srinivas and he called the collector and SP towards monitoring the situation in order to reduce the hardships of the people living in low elevated areas and flood prone villages/cities.
The collector of Parvatipuram-Manyam A. Shyam Prasad has conducted a Situation Review in Respect of flood and flooded areas and announced that the situation is going for the worse from the worse. As per him, the river Jhanjavati rubber dam project was recorded by 492 cusecs of water which was released after ringing out flood alert to people dwelling in the flood prone areas.
A maximum of 115 cusecs of water flow was made out from Vattigadde reservoir as inflows continued to be received from catchment areas. All the district administrations regarding Vizianagaram, Srikakulam and Parvatipuram-Manyam declared that a holiday was given for the educational institutions and grievance day was also suspended in their districts.
