Girls Will Be Girls, the debut film of Suchi Talati, produced by Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal, is going to premiere at Cannes Film Festival 2024. It will fall under Cannes Écrans Juniors section which is a special initiative that screens international feature films suitable for children ages 13 years and above. These movies introduce teenagers to different themes, cultures and cinematic arts.
After its premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, it caused a ripple effect when it won both the Audience Award in the World Dramatic Entry category and Special Jury Award for Lead Actress Preeti Panigrahi during this year Sundance Film Festival. This means that Girls Will Be Girls is ready for its big break in Cannes. It shall be shown on May 22nd & 23rd at Alexandre III Theatre before being screened on May 24th at Raimu Hall.
Richa Chadha said “We are so excited about reaching the Cannes Film festival with our film ‘Girls Will Be Girls’. We have all been completely overwhelmed by all of the appreciation we’ve received so far as this project means everything to us. Putting together this movie was no easy feat but having seen it connect with audiences worldwide has made it worth every moment of blood sweat and tears I’ve put into it. We know that stories can change people’s minds or provoke them to action – this one does both. It looks into what growing up really entails; we can’t wait for Cannes-goers to experience such realisation.”
Ali Fazal further maintained “Right from day one, we had a feeling that there was something special about ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ The kind of response we got from Sundance festival surpassed our expectations, now premiering in Cannes is a dream come true indeed! Suchi Talati has written a beautiful, moving story that deserves to be heard. It’s not only entertaining but also raises pertinent issues for public discussion; we are proud of it. We expect more to follow in future.”
Girls Will Be Girls is produced by Chadha and Fazal’s joint venture Pushing Buttons Studios, in collaboration with Blink Digital and Dolce Vita Films.
