Congressional Republicans, during the opening day of the Democratic National Convention on Monday, lodged a formal case aimed at calling for the impeachment of President Joe Biden in what can be described as a political assault campaign likely to go nowhere.
Joe Biden, through his son Hunter’s foreign business deals, has been charged with corruption according to a report released by three influential committees in the House of Representatives that is controlled by Republicans.
Jim Jordan, who chairs the Judiciary committee, said the investigation had concluded that the allegations were true. “With this investigation, we have proven without any doubt that Joe Biden used his public office for personal financial gain and gave it to his family members and other associates,” he said.
According to James Comer who is chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability “President Biden left behind him; corruption; obstruction and abuse of public office. The evidence our impeachment inquiry brought forth was one strong enough for an impeachment case against any president ever investigated by House of Representatives.”
However, there is no evidence showing that Biden used his position as vice president in helping his son or had anything do with Hunter’s businesses. The document contained no smoking gun but rather some suppositions as well as insinuations about links between father and son.
Biden will speak at the Democratic convention before handing over power to vice-president Kamala Harris in what may be seen as his last chance to shine. He has always denied interfering in any way with his son’s business activities such as those occurring in Ukraine and China.
Republicans have regularly tried to embarrass a sitting president using Hunter Biden’s overseas connections as well as chaotic personal life occasioned by being a drug addict until recently.
But so far no Republican effort lasting many months seeking an impeachment vote against Mr. Trump has come anywhere near getting enough support from lawmakers in their party – something most people see nothing more than another attempt at payback for two previous GOP attempts which failed while he was still in office.
With a slim majority, the Republicans would not be able to keep their ranks closed if they were to impeach Biden, which would expose them to great ridicule.
