History is going to be written at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) as Raj Kapoor’s legendary heartwarming classic Awara of 1951 is making a top big screen release in 4K restoration. This was announced on Monday, August 26 by the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC).
In honour of the 100th Birth Anniversary of Raj Kapoor, the world premiere of the movie Awara will take place in the TIFF Classics section. The black and white also old movie featuring Nargis and Prithviraj Kapoor in it has been beautifully restored by the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) after multiple processes.

As reported by Parami, Shashi Kapoor’s son, Kunal Kapoor and nephew of Raj Kapoor, participated in color correction to make sure the film as old as it is remains both classic and modern. This restoration effort is a realization of the aims of the National Film Heritage Mission and has the official backing of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, India.
Awara focuses on a character named Raj (played of course by Raj Kapoor), a man from lower strata of society who gets lured into crime to feed his mother. It is only when he meets wealthy Rita (Nargis) who changes his fate completely, that he sets out on his quest of atonement.
Thanks to this film, Awara has been successful with the critics and the audience all over the world and even besieged the Cannes Festival by competing for the Palme or award in 1951.
The premiere will take place on September 13 at TIFF.
