Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi unveiled a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Kolhapur on Saturday (October 5, 2024).
Months after a rude furore developed after the collapse of a Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Malvan, Maharashtra, Mr. Gandhi unveiled a 20-foot high MOSAIC equestrian bronze statue of the Maratha warrior king. The statue weighs approximately 2000 kg.
“While unveiling the statue of Appasaheb under no circumstances should there be a tussle between the people over the same and instead be able to be influenced by that which they fought for,” retorted Mr. Gandhi.
Saying that, let’s remember that when independence came, it is what Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj thought from. If you are talking about Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, one has to follow the constitution, said the Congress leader while raising the red constitution book in his hand.
He asked Congress workers to conserve the basic essence of Shivaji Maharaj’s philosophy. “The Congress party is upholding the very reason for which Shivaji Maharaj went in war… Every thought within Maharaja Shivaji’s head, came from the nation of Maharashtra”. “The statue of Shivaji that fell is the edict that says you have to defend his thoughts.
Right at the elections for the Assembly in the State which are due later in the year Mr. Gandhi is in Kolhapur.
The western Maharashtra visit, which is in the prominent sugar-producing region of the State, is important as Kolhapur is the capital of the Chhatrapati and the place where Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj who had a major role in the social reform movement of Maharashtra was born. An event billed as a Samvidhan Sammelan is also scheduled to be organized by Rahul Gandhi on Saturday.
